The first thing to do is to visit  our Submittable page  to see if we are currently accepting submissions.  If we are, send us a query letter, along with a sample of 10 to 20 pages. We are especially intrigued by works that challenge and hybridize genres, that play with convention, that make the reader sit up at vivid passages. Additionally, the majority of our authors are, like What Books Press, Californian, and we always take a keen interest in work that originates in, mirrors, fantasizes on, disassembles, et cetera, our special left coast circumstances. Please consider submitting if this geographical and cultural dimension of the press resonates with your own circumstances. Whether our submission period is open right now or not, be sure to click the catalogue button on the left and go through our list in order to fine-tune your underst...

Art of Albion

Full details  Advice for authors The limited number of new titles appearing on the Heart of Albion web site may give the impression I am not commissioning many new titles. This is not true! While economic matters are generally challenging I am being more selective than usual about what I take on. But clearly I need to publish new books to keep going! Heart of Albion titles are always written in an 'accessible' style, although this does not mean 'dumbed down'. When commissioning titles I send out an 'Advice to authors' document that outlines the preferred ways to develop ideas; guidance on the finer details of 'style', etc.; and otherwise makes the transition from your MS to final typeset as smooth as possible. Do you think you have an idea for a book or booklet that Heart of Albion might publish? Well, before posting all 500 pages of your manuscript, please think about the following topics: Is the subject matter non-fiction and ai...

Due to the high volume of submissions we receive, we are unable to personally respond unless we are interested in pursuing the project. If you have not heard from us within three months of submitting your project, please assume we decided it was not the right fit for our publishing program. ...

Fusion Fragment

Full details  What We Want Science fiction or SF-tinged literary fiction stories and novelettes ranging anywhere from 2,000 to 15,000 words. Although any science fiction subgenre is fair game, our tastes lean towards slipstream, cyberpunk, post-apocalypse, and anything with a little taste of the bizarre. FF prefers character-driven stories, and often skews towards quiet, reflective pieces. If the primary tone of your story is one of high adventure or humour, it’s probably not the right fit for FF. That said, quality always outstrips genre preference in terms of importance, so feel free to send us anything that even vaguely resembles science fiction. We don’t accept reprints. Work written by humans. We have no interest in AI-written stories. We’re always interested in publishing work by marginalized voices. If that’s you, and you feel comfortable doing so, please call this out in your cover letter. What We Pay We pay 4 cents (CAD) per word, up to a maximum...
