Teach Write Journal

 Full details

I am open to a variety of genres and subject matter. The submission does NOT have to be about teaching or learning to be accepted in Teach. Write. I also welcome student writing. It is in your best interest to be familiar with the type of work that I publish. Please see the current issue or read past editions in the archives section of the website.

  • No previous publication experience is necessary. I am looking for work in the following categories:
    • Flash Fiction, any theme or genre except erotica, extremely violent pieces or those laden with profanity. Under 1,000 words
    • Short Fiction, any theme or genre, 1,000-5,000 words, ditto on the exceptions
    • Poetry, any theme or genre (note exceptions above)–up to 100 lines (limit submissions to three poems, please)
    • Creative non-fiction–up to 2,000 words (same exceptions as those above)
    • Short dramas or screenplays–10 pages of dialogue or less (same exceptions)
    • Write Your Own–writing or poetry inspired by your own writing prompts that you have used successfully in class–up to 2,000 words (prose), 100 lines (poetry). Include 50-250 word prompt and/or explanation of prompt.
  • The two submission periods each year are spring/summer–October 1 to March 1 and fall/winter April 1 to September 1. Publication dates will be April 1 for the spring/summer editions and October 1 for the fall/winter editions unless otherwise announced.
  • Submit previously unpublished works in one of the following formats: doc, docx or in rtf. PDF’s cannot be accepted. Email to the following address–teachwritejournal@gmail.com. NOTE: I occasionally accept reprints if you would like to inquire, but I prefer unpublished work. Be sure to let me know where and when the work was previously published.
  • In the subject line of your submission e-mail write the word “submission” your name, category of piece and title (Example: submission_Winkler_flash fiction_What a Life!)
  • REQUIRED! Include in your e-mail a 30-75 word third-person bio explaining your experience as a writing teacher OR explaining the impact a writing instructor has had on you.
  • NOTE: Submissions that do not follow the guidelines may be rejected without being read, so please read and follow these submission guidelines carefully.
  • I will acquire first-time and archival rights. Copyright remains with the author.
  • Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please let me know if your work is accepted elsewhere.
  • This is a one-woman show, and I am now living on a retirement income, so I can’t pay much, but I believe writers should be paid for their work. I issue an honorarium of $15 for short stories, creative non-fiction, and essays; $10 for all other categories, upon or soon following, publication, payable via PayPal or Venmo. Sorry, I can’t provide any alternate form of payment. Any donations of honorariums will go to support Teach. Write. or the programs of the North Carolina Writers’ Network.

I look forward to reading your work!

Katie Winkler
