submission guidelines
december invites submissions of poetry, fiction, and
creative non-fiction (essays, memoirs, biography, literary journalism,
social or cultural commentary or analysis) and visual art that can be
reproduced in our print format. We read general
submissions from October 1 — May 1. Submissions received outside
that window will not be considered and will be discarded. See our
contest page for contest guidelines and entry dates.
Our reading period for general submissions is CLOSED. Thank you for sending us your work. We look forward to reading it.
ALL SUBMISSIONS ARE READ BLINDLY. DO NOT INCLUDE ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION ON YOUR SUBMISSION. MANUSCRIPTS WITH PERSONAL INFORMATION WILL BE DECLINED AND NO REFUNDS WILL BE GIVEN. Any personal information should go in the cover letter section in the submittable form.
december publishes only original, previously unpublished work. Self-publication and work that appears online are considered to have been published.
december does not consider simultaneous submissions, but we try to respond within 6-8 weeks.If you have not heard from us after 10 weeks please query through submittable. Please do not submit more than once per genre per submission period. Additional submittable submissions will be held until the subsequent period. Additional paper submissions will be discarded and not considered.

Poetry Submissions:
- Submissions should include 1-5 poems in a single file, with each poem separated by page breaks.
- Please include page numbers on the manuscript if the submission is longer than 1 page.
- Do not include your name anywhere in the document or submission title to allow our readers to view submissions blindly.
- In the cover letter portion of Submittable, please include your name, address, phone number and email. Please indicate which genre your submissions belongs in and the title(s) of your work.
Prose Submissions:
- Submissions should include no more than one story or essay.
- Flash/very short fiction or nonfiction (max. 1,000 words each) will be considered in a group of no more than three.
- Do not include your name anywhere in the document or submission title to allow our readers to view submissions blindly.
- In the cover letter portion of Submittable, please include your name, address, phone number and email. Please indicate which genre your submissions belongs in and the title(s) of your work.
Art submissions:
- Art submissions may be low-resolution images for evaluation, but artists must be able to supply high-res images for publication.
- Questions about art submissions should be directed to art@decembermag.org.
december accepts submissions online through Submittable. The submission fee for non-subscribers helps maintain the submission service and our website. The fee is waived for subscribers. Work from non-subscribers submitted through the subscriber portal will not be considered.
december accepts submissions through the U.S. mail. If submitting by mail, please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) with sufficient postage, and indicate if you would like your manuscript returned. Manuscripts sent outside the submission window will not be considered and will be discarded. Paper submissions are usually responded to within 12 weeks.
december assumes no responsibility for delayed, lost, or damaged manuscripts.

We pay our contributors! If your work is accepted, payment includes two contributor copies of the issue in which the author’s work appears and $10.00 per page with a minimum of $40.00 and a maximum of $200.00.
