Aetla

 Full details

Please email your proposal to hello@aetla.co

We will consider pitches for our online journal/newsletter at any time, choosing the publishing platform at our discretion.

We are looking for content that probes the relationship between humans and nature, unearthing stories that explore how to be a modern human in a wild world. Through written and visual storytelling, we share adventures, ideas and people who are immersed in enjoying the planet while also protecting it.

Our audience expects engaging, beautiful images and stories that you can disappear into. Any pitches should focus on the following ideals: sustainable travel and adventure, conscious and slow living, wellness and spirituality, and sustainable living.

If you have an idea that you believe would appeal to wildhearted changemakers who want to live fully, but also sustainably and ethically, then we’d love to consider it.

As a small but growing magazine, we have a modest budget. Payment for online stories is £35 - £75 and for print stories £60 - £150.

What type of stories ætla is looking for

We publish articles of varying lengths, but most commonly around 800 – 2,000 words, or between 6 – 12 images. We always suggest that potential contributors familiarise themselves with the type of content ætla publish, and the tone and style with which our contributors tell those stories. We tend toward stories of adventure, hope and ingenuity. Be creative with your submission – no experience is too small to create an engaging story for our readers.

We pride ourselves on high-quality storytelling from every corner of the world – we place no limits on your location. Stories should be a new take on human/nature, be inspiring, positive and thoughtful, reflecting on the power of nature and our place within it. Our readers want to discover stories that truly capture them and their emotions.

For example, if you are writing about your travels or adventure, we don’t just want to know what you did, but the very bones of the experience and how they made you feel. Or, if you’re pitching an interview with someone, we want to know why you think the person or brand would be relevant to our readership.

Guidelines for pitching to ætla

As a small team, keeping up with submissions and proposals takes some time. To ensure we respond to everyone within three months, we ask that proposals include:

Whether you are pitching for a written story or a visual essay.

A suggested title and one-paragraph proposal outlining the story, or the images you would include if proposing a visual essay.

The first paragraph of your proposed story, or introduction to your visual essay or a small portfolio of previously published written work.

3-4 low-res images, or a link to an online gallery (Instagram is fine) that showcases the best original imagery to accompany the story.

A ‘behind the scenes’ snippet of 150-200 words about the experience behind the story.

Please note that submissions must be in English and unpublished.

For stories we accept, we will offer a publication home depending on where we think it fits best (ie. online, newsletter or ætla).

Promotional Stories/Press Releases

We are always happy to receive story proposals and press releases from businesses and individuals aligned with our approach to stories and ethical values. However, we do not offer payment for these stories and would seek to create a partnership arrangement.

For information about partnerships please see this page.
