Ultimo Press is currently open for submissions. We are seeking general and literary fiction (especially the sweet spot in between), and non-fiction that inspires and ignites. Our ambition is to publish compelling new voices and original perspectives that reflect the full spectrum of Australian life. We do not accept children’s, young adult or picture books. (You can visit our friends at Hardie Grant Children’s Publishing if you are an aspiring children’s author.) Please read our submissions guidelines before submitting your work.

Publisher biographies
Alex Craig began her publishing career at Pan Macmillan, having previously worked in magazine journalism. She was Publisher of Picador Australia until 2016 where she published Hannah Kent, Lucy Treloar and Shirley Barrett. She has published commercial non-fiction, literary fiction and bookclub bestsellers with a particular focus on women’s voices and stories.
Alex is currently accepting historical fiction, commercial women’s fiction from uplit to domestic noir, and women’s memoir. She loves books with heart.
Brigid Mullane is a commissioning editor at Ultimo Press. She previously worked at Hachette where she was the Managing Editor. Before that, she was the editor of literary journal Kill Your Darlings.
Brigid is currently accepting narrative and literary non-fiction, and contemporary fiction that appeals to millennial readers. She is interested in activism and politics, nature and science writing, pop culture and criticism and memoir. She encourages LGBTQIA+ and own voices submissions across all topics.
Publishing Director of Ultimo Press, Robert Watkins, has over 20 years experience in the Australian book industry having worked in book retail, sales, marketing, publicity, publishing and most recently as Head of Literary at Hachette Australia. He’s published award-winning authors Maxine Beneba Clarke, Nardi Simpson, Claire G. Coleman, Sarah Schmidt, Michael Mohammed Ahmad, Victoria Hannan and JP Pomare among many others.
Robert is currently accepting literary thrillers, contemporary literary fiction and narrative non-fiction with a focus on contemporary issues.
Submission guidelines
To submit your work to Ultimo Press, please fill out the form below. You will be asked to prepare some additional information about your work including:

Pitch: The pitch describes your book and why it will be interesting to readers. Why are you the right person to tell this story.

Audience: Who is your intended audience? What other books or authors is your work like?

Synopsis (up to 500 words): This is a brief summary of the plot or narrative arc of your book. A synopsis outlines the main characters and conveys how the story unfolds, including the major turning points.

Manuscript: Please upload your manuscript as a word document, double spaced using Times New Roman. For fiction, please attach the full manuscript. For non-fiction you do not need a full manuscript, but please supply a detailed chapter breakdown and at least three sample chapters.
