Submissions
We invite submissions of poetry, prose poems, flash fiction, creative
non-fiction, essays, translations, interviews and reviews. We do not
accept simultaneous submissions or previously published material. There
is no set theme. However, we are looking for the unusual, perceptive,
risk-taking as well as the imagistic, lived and visionary. Some linkage
between language use and more than one event in any line would grab the
editor’s attention. We receive more than 1200 poems per month and aim to
respond to every submission within two months. This could be longer if a
poem is shortlisted. We recommend buying the latest issue of the
magazine to obtain a stronger sense of our requirements. We publish a
diversity of styles and approaches in the belief that there is more than
one or two ways of producing effective and memorable poetry and
writing.
General submission guidelines
We do not accept simultaneous submissions.
We aim to provide a forum for lively writing and debate. Poetry can be of any length. Single spaced. Fiction can be short – up to 100 words, or long – up to 3,500. We publish short prose poems, flash fiction and creative non-fiction. We publish a wide range of reviews and essays on recent books and anthologies that are scholarly, that is to say, informed, critical and aware without being poorly written and full of jargon. We also publish conversation pieces with poets. Enquiries welcome with interview suggestions.
All work must not have been previously published, either in print or online. We are able to accept single spaced submissions sent by email with an accompanying attachment in Word or rtf, and by post to Tears in the Fence, The Flats, Durweston Mill, Mill Lane, Durweston, Blandford Forum, Dorset DT11 0QD. Please do not send in a PDF. We write to contributors as soon as a decision is made. As Tears in the Fence receives more than 300 poems every week, and sometimes more, we cannot consider more than 6 poems per submission. There is no need to include more than six poems. Please remember to include your name at the end of each submission to aid filing. We read poems and not names. Please include a two line biographical note if you have not submitted before and a picture of yourself. This is for our Instagram page if you get accepted for publication.

If for poetry formatting reasons it’s better to send your work in an attachment, then please put all your poems into one document. If you have an idea for a potential essay, review or interview, please get in touch with a short description of what you would like to do via our contact page.
Poems and prose remain the copyright of their author. Contributors receive a copy of the issue in which they appear and can purchase further copies.
