Plays in Progress

Full details

What is it?

Plays in Progress is a global/local new play development program that experiments with technology and process to discover new structures and practices and, ultimately, the best of all possible worlds.

So like… wait — what?

Williamsburg theatre artists collaborate with playwrights living around the world to develop new work here in Williamsburg in a thoughtful, supportive, and intimate environment.
By bringing developmental readings into local businesses, cafes, and venues, we hope to further integrate Williamsburg’s rich arts community with its thriving business community and to invite new audiences into the creative process of making theatre.
By streaming readings on-line through HowlroundTV and hosting Twitter conversation on #newplay, we hope to raise awareness of established and emerging writers’ new work and to foster dialogue between Williamsburg’s arts community and the national and international communities.

Cool!  How does it work?

Through an open and rolling submission process, our lit team selects plays from playwrights living in the U.S. and abroad.
Selected playwrights discuss their goals for the script with our staff and attend discussions/rehearsals either in person or over Skype.
We hold a public reading in a local Williamsburg business, attended by a live audience and streamed to a global audience using HowlroundTV and #newplay on Twitter.
Following the reading, the playwright joins the Williamsburg audience for a discussion and feedback session.
Lather.  Rinse.  Repeat as needed.

How do I get in on this action?

Well, first and foremost…
Be There  If you’re lucky enough to be in the Williamsburg area for the next reading, come join us!  9 out of 10 dentists agree that Panglossian’s audience is intelligent, attractive, and sophisticated.  Yeah, they’re talking about you.  And nobody really likes that other dentist anyway.
Log On  Stuck at the office?  In Hong Kong?  On the run from the government in an exotic but unspecified location?  Or just can’t bear to leave your cat home alone with the flu?  Wherever you are, you’re invited!  Just log on at http://howlround.tv.  Have a living room?  Have a friend (or a cat)?  Make it a watch party!
Tell People
If you’re having a good time, don’t keep it all to yourself.  Spread the love.  Facebook.  Tweet.  Tell your dentist.

Yeah, but I mean IN ON THE ACTION

Really, the sky is the limit.  Here are some of the things people are doing.  You could be one of them.  Or think up something new.  We’re all ears.  Just get in touch!
Host a Reading
Do you work with a Williamsburg area business or venue?  Think about joining Aromas and New Town Art Gallery by hosting a reading at your place.  We’ll spread your name all over town and bring people in.  All we ask is some space, some chairs, a good internet connection, and a smile.
Community Outreach
Do you know Williamsburg?  Love the arts?  Help us find partnerships and opportunities for collaboration with organizations and businesses in our community.
Write
Working on a new full-length?  Bring it on.  Learn more on our submission page.
Direct
Have experience directing?  Have a little (just a little) free time?  Try directing a reading.  Spend a rehearsal or two discussing a new script with a cast of intelligent, skilled, and well-groomed actors.  Then, set that bad boy loose.
Act
Love new plays?  Have insight, talent, and goodwill to spread?  Let us know!  We’ll contact you when there’s a spot for you.  Who knows — one day you could be bragging to all your friends that you originated THAT role in the developmental reading.  “To be or not to be… Yeah, that was all me.”
A/V Club
When it comes to videography, photography, or web stuff, do you have that certain je ne sais quoi?  We want you.  Help us produce the live stream and document the event for posterity.
