Guidelines for Submission

Painted Bride Quarterly accepts:

  • Up to 3 poems
  • Fiction up to 5,000 words
  • Flash fiction up to 1,000 words, spread between (at max.) 3 pieces
  • Creative nonfiction up to 5,000 words
  • Essays and reviews up to 3,000 words, in any genre or school (occasional exceptions are made)

We will read and consider simultaneous submissions. You can submit via our Submittable site linked below, and if your piece is accepted elsewhere, we ask that you withdraw the submission through the Submittable site and/or inform us via email (the former is preferred).

We ask that you refrain from editing a piece once it has been submitted, as this demands a re-review from our editors and unnecessarily complicates the publishing process should your work be accepted. If you must edit a piece, please withdraw the original and make a new submission.

All publications are announced via our Instagram @paintedbridequarterly (online issues are regularly released en masse, with occasional updates). This is the best place to keep up with PBQ and its publications, including yours.

Our democratic editorial policy takes time, so forgive us if we take a bit to get back to you, and rest assured that your work gets the undivided attention of several members of our editorial board. Please also know that we never take a reading hiatus and we sincerely appreciate your submissions.

Artwork

Photographs, paintings, etchings, lithographs and line drawings are now accepted in black & white and color for publication on our website, and in black & white only for our print annual. If submitting artwork for our website, please do so via paintedbridequarterly1973@gmail.com. We appreciate photoshop files (psd.), or JPGs (size 1024×768).

The Nitty-Gritty

If your work appears on a blog, we ask that, upon acceptance, you add a line that the work is forthcoming in Painted Bride Quarterly. Once we publish your piece, please remove it from your blog and redirect viewers to our site, as that is where the work will now live.

Painted Bride Quarterly asks for North American serial and anthology rights. The copyright will be returned to you after publication.

If you have any further questions about the submission guidelines, please contact us at paintedbridequarterly1973@gmail.com.
