Job Description

Join our dedicated team at Chelsea Young Writers and contribute to our vibrant workshops. We are looking for an energetic and passionate freelance tutor with experience in leading creative writing sessions for primary school children. This role combines teaching, creativity, and a flair for performance, ideal for someone who can bring stories to life and engage a young audience. Compensation is £35 per hour for multi-hour teaching sessions and £45 for one hour sessions.

The sessions will be held at venues, including select schools, predominantly in Kensington & Chelsea.

Job Requirements

  • 1-3 years of experience teaching groups of primary school children, in a teaching or coaching capacity.
  • Graduate degree in English, Drama, or Creative Writing preferred.
  • Strong grasp of creative writing fundamentals such as plotting, storyboarding, character creation, and literary devices.
  • Passion for reading and a deep knowledge of both classic and contemporary children's literature.
  • Theatre experience and experience with children with special educational needs are highly desirable.
  • Must currently hold an Enhanced DBS certificate and be registered on the Update Service (proof will be requested).

Job Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging workshops: Lead creative writing workshops for children aged 6-12, focusing on narrative construction, character development, and plot structuring to both educate and inspire young writers.
  • Create a dynamic environment: Utilise a variety of interactive teaching techniques to foster a supportive and stimulating atmosphere that encourages creativity and the expression of ideas.
  • Foster creativity and storytelling: Encourage students to explore different writing styles and genres, helping them discover their voices and see writing as a tool for personal expression.
  • Promote collaborative learning: Facilitate group activities like peer reviews and brainstorming sessions to build students' confidence and communication skills while making learning fun.
  • Adapt to individual needs: Tailor teaching methods to meet the diverse learning styles and paces of students, ensuring all children progress and feel valued in their creative journey.
